Note: This process requires you to click the buttons in MS Project to create a chart in WBS Schedule Pro. If you filter in MS Project and click the Task Bar at the bottom of the screen, it will activate WBS Schedule Pro, but it will not display the filtered tasks from MS Project.

In this review, we are comparing 3 comprehensive WBS tools: WBS Schedule Pro, Microsoft Visio 2019 and MindView to see which software application is the best WBS software. There are other drawing tools and mind mapping software on the market that can help with making a WBS chart such as SmartDraw, Lucidchart, MindManager, Visual Paradigm, etc. We have selected MS Visio as it is well-known amongst project managers, along with WBS Schedule Pro and MindView for their ability to create a WBS chart, WBS Dictionary and continuous planning.

In regards to efficiency, it is important to be able to take the WBS chart you have made and export it to other document types or formats without having to re-enter data. Typically, a project manager has to take a picture of a whiteboard and then re-create the data in another format (Word, Excel, Project etc.). In both WBS Schedule Pro and MindView, you are able to export your WBS into MS Word, MS Excel or MS Project which will save you a lot of time. Visio exports to a basic XML file that can be opened in MS Excel and MS Word but lacks the customization and formatting of the other 2 tools. In most scenarios, people use MS Excel and MS Word for the WBS Dictionary.

Use a simple formula to subtract the start date from the end date. That way your Excel worksheet will automatically calculate the length of each task in your gantt chart. For instance, we entered =C2-B2 into the Duration field for our first task.

If the labels on the horizontal axis of your gantt chart show numbers instead of dates, click the Number section of the Format Axis window to expand it.Change the category from Number to Date. Now the horizontal axis will show readable dates.

You can save any Excel file you make as a template. Simply follow these steps to build a gantt chart of your own in Excel. Then click File >Save as template to create an Excel gantt chart template you can use again and again to schedule project timelines.

Start by downloading our free gantt chart Excel template, which has progress bars built-in. Then all you have to do is update progress in the Percent Complete column, and Excel will adjust the taskbar on the gantt chart to reflect the current status.

As a PMP Project manager, it is where I begin a project, large or small. The WBS view is good for strategic planning and there is an easy switch from a chart view to Gantt chart view with ability to updates in all views. There are a great many options for tracking time, tasks and exporting of data.It is a very solid technical program. I use it for tracking and managing projects and for easy reporting to project stakeholders and team members. It really is where I start outlining a new project, website or estimate.

Pairing a work breakdown structure with a Gantt chart provides information on tasks and subtasks along with a visual view of project management. This is sort of like combining a WBS outline, dictionary, and project schedule in a single template. You can organize tasks using WBS outline numbering, include whatever details are pertinent to your project - such as duration, completion status, deadlines, and assigned owners - and use the Gantt chart to visually track progress and outcomes.

GanttProject can export documents to Microsoft Project format and import existing documents. If you need custom processing of the project data, export to CSV or Excel is available. Reports and printable charts can be produced with export to PDF and PNG.

A Gantt chart is a horizontal bar chart used to illustrate the timeline of a project and its tasks. This gives your team a visual overview of your project schedule, upcoming milestones, and overall project timeline.

The earliest version of a Gantt chart was invented by Karol Adamiecki, who invented what he called the harmonogram in 1896. Adamiecki published his findings in Russian and Polish, which made them difficult to access in English-speaking countries. In 1910, Henry Gantt independently popularized a similar chart in the United States, which he devised in order to represent how long factory workers spent on a given task. These two systems have since been merged to create what we know of today as the modern-day Gantt chart.

Build and manage complex projects: The bigger the project, the more tasks there are to manage. Gantt charts can help project managers easily visualize a project and break it down into smaller tasks.

Plans will inevitably change, which is why your Gantt chart software should be able to adapt to your needs. Look for a tool that allows you to easily drag and drop tasks, and that automatically updates dependencies in real time. That way, you can always keep your project on track, even as plans shift.

Gantt Chart views allow you see, at a glance, task information in a columns and rows with corresponding bars along a timeline. You can customize the chart part of these views in Project to better suit your needs. For example, you can change how nonworking time is displayed, or you may want to format a Gantt Chart view to quickly identify specific tasks, or perhaps you want to add text to specific bars to help you identify them.

While free Gantt chart software is great for small teams or low-budget projects, investing in paid Gantt chart tools can be worth it. It can give you access to more features and projects, as well as include more team members on the platform.

I evaluated and compared free Gantt chart software on the market that includes Gantt chart functionality as a primary project planning feature. Then I weighed factors that make this kind of software a good option for anyone looking for a free tool, such as the ones that follow.

Why I picked Paymo: Within Gantt charts, users can click and drag on the timeline to estimate a task duration, then pinch its ends to extend or shorten it. Apart from the standard dependencies, you can set lead and lag time to account for overlaps or delays, and even auto-schedule tasks based on those dependencies and constraints.

Integrations are available natively with apps such as Slack, Adobe Creative Cloud, Google Drive, QuickBooks Online, Xero, JotForm, and Shift, to name a few. Other integrations are available through Zapier or by syncing with their fully-documented API.

Why I picked OpenProject: This software is completely customizable and can be adapted to your operation. OpenProject has a free community edition that includes most features you need from a project management software. The platform is secure, GNU GPL v3 licensed, and GDPR compliant. Finally, they have on-premise and cloud licenses if you have the budget for them.

Why I picked Tema Gantt: Team leads will be able to manage resources, stay on budget, and ensure everyone is working but not overloaded with an easy-to-access availability tab. Gantt charts can be easily compared between planned and actual timelines with a baseline report, which helps with future forecasting.

Why I picked dotProject: It is completely free and volunteer supported, support is given by the community, and it is constantly updated. The core product has many of the features that you would expect from a project management tool, and it is completely customizable.

Why I picked ProjectLibre: The software has been around since 2012, and is a global provider of project management software in almost 200 countries. Besides being platform agnostic, it can import MS Project files with ease. Their Gantt charts are fully functional with everything you would expect and then some, like resource usage indicators and a histogram.

Why I picked Tom's Planner: You can easily drag and drop color-coded time blocks, stretch and contract individual task bars, and zoom in and out from hourly to monthly views. This software is intuitive and can help you quickly build a Gantt chart without prior experience. Finally, the website has a collection of useful training videos.

Why I picked GanttProject: The application lets you break down your daily and weekly work, build a Gantt chart timeline, assign resources, calculate project costs, and then export the results easily to PDF, CSV, or PNG. You can import and export data directly into/out of MS Project and Excel, as well. GanttProject serves over 25 languages at this time.

Why I picked ClickUp: It offers Gantt charts along with Kanban boards, calendars, conversations, and reminders in a bright, user-friendly interface that you will enjoy. The UI has drag-and-drop gestures and even offers a dark mode if you are into that. Users can create Spaces dedicated to certain departments or projects (customer service, graphic design, marketing, etc.) and get a bird's eye view of what's going on at all times.
